Since September 2022, Red Oaks has adopted the KAGAN approach to learning.
KAGAN was devised by Dr Spencer Davies as a way to improve academic achievement, develop thinking skills, increase social skills, self esteem and confidence within the learning environment. It also aims to enhance positive independence, individual accountability, equal participation and simultaneous interaction. These are lifelong skills which will support the children throughout their lives.
Teaching staff use a number of agreed strategies across all aspects of the curriculum. |
Key Facts:
- 5 KAGAN strategies 2022-2023: Rally Robin, Round Robin, Rally Coach, Timed Pair Share along with Thinking Time and No Hands Up plus a range of Team Building activities.
- Classrooms will be set out in groups 4-6 children who will be numbered 1-4 and labelled as A or B.
- KAGAN groups are mixed ability based on a large number of factors. These groups will be changed each term.
- When any member of staff raises their arms, children are expected to stop their task and stop talking too.
- All children will be given training and opportunities to practise each of the 5 strategies as well as other KAGAN approaches.
- All teaching spaces display relevant KAGAN strategy posters.
- Regular training, updates and monitoring is carried out by the KAGAN Champion (ROS Laina Storey).
