How do we include our Deaf pupils?
Dojo –
Children and parents have access to their mainstream class Dojo as well as the SBI Dojo. In SBI Dojo, updates can be found that are SBI specific as well as children's spellings which have been recorded into BSL to help them understand the meanings of the words.

Interactive learning platform for children to complete work set by the Teacher of the Deaf
Evidence for Learning –
Photographic and video evidence against EHCP targets are uploaded by all SBI staff and Mrs Egerton sends a small selection home to parents on a weekly basis.
Widgit Online –

Used throughout the mainstream school and helps all Red Oaks children to learn key vocabulary and knowledge

This is our method of delivering the phonic curriculum which is based on BSL and is used throughout the whole school which provides deaf children with direct access.
GoRead –

All pupils at Red Oaks now record their reading, at home and school, on GoRead. Every morning, the deaf pupils meet together and read to a member of the SBI team.

Other aspects of our provision include;
  • Lots of our mainstream teachers have Level 1 and Level 2 BSL.
  • Support staff and wider school staff have signing qualifications.
  • All assemblies are interpreted.
  • All school performances are interpreted (for deaf families).
  • Essential reading books for each year group have been interpreted.
  • BSL has been integrated within our English curriculum.
  • An interpreter is provided for parents evenings.
